OREGON CITY, Ore. (KOIN) — The audio recordings allegedly of former Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle talking about his sexual interest in children may spur more conversation about how to protect kids from predators.
In one clip, Fogle allegedly is talking with a woman:( Fogle)”I like all ages. That’s the thing I mean. I like all of them., you know. “(Woman) “Well, what makes it different, I mean, from one age to another? Why does –“(Fogle) “Well, it depends which — who is ready for what. You know, who’s going to give you the glance. You know what I mean? I like all ages. That’s the thing. I mean, I like them all, you know.”
Barbara Peshiera, the executive director of the Children’s Center in Oregon City, said predators are attracted to places where children are. She said they are going to try and identify children who are vulnerable.(Fogle) “And we just start sharing stories, and then, you know, we get a little closer, and a little closer, and a little closer, and before you know it, you know it’s — you know, it just — it just starts to happen.”(Woman) “So it’s not that hard to do?” (Jared) “No, not at all.”The Children’s Center lists 5 steps to protect kids
Peschiera said things like this just don’t happen.
“I think it’s very intentional. I don’t think it just starts to happen. That is where he is directing that relationship.”
Peschiera said it is so important to have an ongoing conversation with children about keeping their bodies safe. A good place to start, she said, is to teach children about their personal space or bubble.
She said to encourage them to think of 3 safe people they could tell if they feel someone has broken that bubble
“We want our kids to know that we are in charge of our bodies and they can pretend that they have a bubble around them and that people shouldn’t pop that bubble.”
“It really sends a powerful message to people who are caring for our kids if they know we’re going to drop in anytime,” she said. “It’s really about sendintg a clear message that you are attentive and paying attention.”
As a parent it is also important to be vigilant. Whether it is daycare or sports, find out how children are being supervised.
And, she said, don’t ignore your instincts. If you think something doesn’t seem right, don’t be afraid to reach out for help.
