GARDENDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Update (7/19): The suspect in the Gardendale officer-involved shooting will be jailed on a $130,000 total bond.
Original: The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting. It happened Wednesday night near Gardendale First Baptist Church on Mountain Crest Parkway and Mount Olive Road.
Investigators said a call came in before 11 p.m. about shots fired. When an officer went to the church to investigate, he found four adult men outside of a vehicle. One of those four had a pistol. Investigators said when the suspect refused to drop his weapon, he got in the car and started driving towards the officer. That’s when SBI said the officer fired once at the suspect, hitting him.
Paramedics transported the unidentified suspect to UAB, who is in stable condition. The officer was not hurt.
Three other people were taken into custody, including one who was tased, and released sometime before 5 p.m. Thursday. So far, no charges have been filed.
“It’s a very traumatic experience for these men when they encounter something like this,” said Stan Hogeland, the Mayor of Gardendale.
Hogeland tells us that this incident has affected him personally. On the one hand because officer-involved shooting happened in his city and involved the Gardendale Police Department, and on the other hand because he is the son of a former Officer.
“It hits really close to home and I just have a tremendous amount of respect for those who wear the badge,” said Hogeland.
