Birmingham father dead, son in custody after argument leads to shooting


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The identity of the man who allegedly shot and killed his father Wednesday night has been released.

Charles Stewart Jr., 27, was arrested and charged with reckless murder. He was transported to the Jefferson County Jail with a $15,000 bond.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the 60-year-old man who was shot and killed by his son Wednesday night.

Charles Sylvester Stewart Sr., 60, of Birmingham, was shot and killed after a argument broke out between Stewart and his son.

Just after 7 p.m. Wednesday night, officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 1600 block of 51st Street Ensley. When they arrived, they found the victim unresponsive on the floor with a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced the victim dead.

Investigators believe that the incident originated as a physical altercation that escalated to the son shooting his father.
