5 charged in connection with Dora missing teen murder

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Five people have been charged in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Nicholas Hawkins.

The latest suspect charged was the first to be arrested.

Joshua Adam Reese was previously being held on an unrelated charge.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office Friday announced Reese had been charged with murder.

Bond for Reese is set at $500,000, and the Walker County Police Chief said their investigations have lead them to believe that Reese was the one who shot and murdered Hawkins.

“We feel like our investigation shows that Joshua Reese is the person who shot and murdered Nicholas Hawkins,” said Walker County Sheriff James Underwood.

Underwood said there is one suspect that investigators are still examining, and they expect to make another arrest soon.

Investigators are not revealing the exact location where Reese allegedly shot Hawkins–or a motive. People CBS42 spoke to after he was initially arrested had their suspicions, including his brother Jacob.

Jacob said he had accompanied Nicholas to meet with Reese before.

“That meeting wasn’t well, it didn’t go good, I was ready to leave and I told my brother we needed to leave, we just had to leave and he didn’t like the fact that we were going to leave, but we left,” Jacob recalled.

“He seems like he could really hurt somebody,” said Katheren Rogers, Nicholas’ friend.

Investigators say this is a tragedy that will haunt Hawkins’ family forever.

“Their nightmare doesn’t stop, even today. Their nightmare will be with them for the rest of their lives because of the actions of the people that have been charged,” said Walker County District Attorney Bill Adair.

Sheriff Underwood said they are expecting to charge one more person with hindrance to prosecution.

“It’s a great day in Walker County to show that we work together to solve these serious crimes,” Underwood said. Those charged in connection with the death of Nicholas Hawkins are listed below:

21-year-old Joshua Adam Reese, of Quinton, Ala. is charged with murder. He has a court order to be held on no bond, but the bond amount for the murder charge is $250,00 cash, and $500 cash for a CRO violation charge.

Hawkins’ body was found last Tuesday night near an old construction dump site in the woods off K D Byrd Station Road in Quinton. He was reported missing Saturday.

Last Wednesday, the coroner identified the body as the missing teen.

Hawkins’ mother spoke to CBS42 reporter Matt Fernandez.

“I hope they get sent to jail and prison and get everything they deserve. I hope they never make it to heaven where Nicholas is because Nicholas does not deserve what they did to him and they took [his] life from me. I don’t appreciate them taking my son from me, I don’t appreciate it at all. They don’t know what they have done to me. They took the love of my life–my precious angel–from me,” she said.
