2 charged after Vestavia Hills early morning chase

VESTAVIA Hills, Ala. (WIAT) — Two suspects have been charged with receiving stolen property and attempting to elude after a vehicle chase in Vestavia Hills.

A Vestavia Hills police officer was patrolling the Cahaba Heights area around 4 a.m. when he saw a vehicle driving erratically on Bearden Lane, Vestiavia Hills Chief of Police Dan Rary said in a press release. The officer turned on his emergency lights to stop the vehicle, but they fled. The officer chased the vehicle briefly until the suspect stopped on Cahaba Dr and ran on foot into nearby woods. The passenger tried to run into the woods, but the officer captured them.

Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills police set a perimeter to track down the driver with help from the K-9 named Bo. The driver was taken into custody.

The vehicle was discovered to be stolen out of Anniston and police say both suspects had outstanding felony warrants.

39-year-old John Kendall Mitchell of Talladega and 40-year-old Joy Renae Moreland of Anniston were both charged with receiving stolen property in the first degree (felony) and attempting to elude (misdemeanor). Both Mitchell and Moreland’s bonds are set at $10,300.
