2 arrested after Alabama fan dies from bar beating following LSU game

PONCHATOULA , La. (WIAT) -- Two suspects are facing manslaughter charges in the death of an Alabama fan who was beaten in a bar fight Sunday following the LSU game, CBS station 4WWL in New Orleans reports.

Police told 4WWL the altercation in Ponchatoula Pub left 46-year-old Robert Bowers unconscious and severely injured after he was allegedly struck by the suspects, Azia Crockett, 27, and Ryan Anthony, 24. Bowers passed away Tuesday from his injuries.

Baton Rouge TV station WBRZ reports that the family of Bowers believes his fandom was a motivating factor in the fight, though police told WWL they are still investigating whether the fact Bowers was an Alabama fan had anything to do with the incident.

"He was wearing Alabama gear. We can’t confirm that’s what the actual first argument about. He had a niece that was there that we believe was instigating and agitating the situation. Just prior to the fight, she was removed by security," Ponchatoula Chief Bry Layrisson said to WWL4. "It appears Mr. Bowers was in a verbal argument with Azia Crockett and while they were in a verbal argument, Ryan Anthony struck him in the head, knocking him to the ground, possibly knocking him unconscious. Then once he was on the ground, Azia Crockett jumped on top of him and punched him multiple times as well."
