COOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A man who escaped the Coosa County Jail in 2017 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to the charges surrounding his escape.

Shane Anthony Vernon, 29, escaped from the Coosa County Jail on Nov. 19, 2017 and then made his way to Elmore County where he stole two vehicles from owners at gunpoint.

Upon stealing the second vehicle, Vernon forced the owner to ride with him. They traveled to Georgia, near Atlanta, and Vernon let the owner go. The following day, Vernon was recaptured by authorities after responding to a suspicious call at an apartment complex.

Vernon’s sentence will run consecutively and will then be subject to five years of supervised release.
