MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Congressman Bradley Byrne is officially running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.  He made the announcement before a standing room crowd only at Wintzell’s Oyster House in downtown Mobile.

However, Congressman Byrne believes this will be a very expensive and heated race.  He knows his family and his entire past will be put under a microscope.  Regardless he says, “If good people don’t stand up and run for government, the bad people do.  So good people even when they know they’re going to be maligned in the process have to stand up and fight and I’m willing to stand up and fight.”

So many politicians have lost races or even been ran out of office due to scandal.  Incumbent Senator Doug Jones beat former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore after Moore was rocked with one scandal after another.  Now Byrne and his team are preparing for political tricks or accusation.

He says, “I’m not gonna say it’s gonna be easy and there are gonna be moments that they’re gonna throw a lot of bad stuff at me.  It won’t be true.  That’s ok, We know the truth, and the truth will win out in the end of the day.”

If Byrne wins the primary in March 2020, he’ll face off with Democratic Senator Doug Jones. The Jones Campaign sent out this release after Byrne’s announcement.

“Given the results of his losing bid for Governor in 2010, in which he did not even win the Republican nomination, it’s hard to see why they would nominate a career politician like Bradley Byrne now. He has been part of the problem in Washington for years.
It doesn’t matter if Senator Jones has 1 opponent or 100. His focus is working for the people of Alabama whether it’s protecting our auto jobs and farmers against dangerous tariffs or building health care infrastructure in Alabama’s rural communities.
While some are focused only on the politics, and the politics of division in particular, Senator Jones is focused on finding common ground and getting things done for the people of Alabama.”

This article was updated to clarify that the statement from Sen. Jones came from the Doug Jones for Senate Campaign, and not directly from Sen. Jones.
