‘Close the Child Detention Camps Now’ protests underway

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Demonstrations are taking place all around the nation in protest of horrible conditions in the child detention centers in the country.

It’s a countrywide protest sponsored by over 20 national groups. Sadly everyone has all seen the images and heard the stories of unsafe, unsanitary conditions where children have been separated from their families. Activists and protestors are asking that the camps be closed and families reunited.

Happening Tuesday afternoon, at the Vance Federal building many will come together and protests the horrible and unbearable conditions in child detention centers.

Elected officials, representatives of minority groups, clergy, labor unions, and others will all gather in protest. It’s a national day of action.
Birmingham City leaders are expected to participate as well.
