City leaders believe UAB would entertain conference switch

News

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., (WIAT) — The support of Birmingham city councilor William Parker is an enormous step towards progress for UAB that’s emerging. “We have to always think outside the box,” says Parker.

Within two weeks Parker says he’ll be bringing a resolution before the Birmingham city council seeking the support from them and the Mayor Randall Woodfin backing UAB as they could possibly move forward in their quest to move to the AAC.

The conference would include Memphis a rival of UAB as well as Central Florida. “This will be a great benefit not only to UAB football, but also to the city of Birmingham. It’s going to mean more visitors will be coming in to town. They’ll also be spending more money at restaurants and staying in our hotels,” says Parker.

UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram says “To comment would be speculation and inappropriate. We are proud charter members of conference USA.”
