Central AL Forecast: More storms today and tracking Barry

We’ve got several forecast challenges as we head into the weekend, all related to what Tropical Storm Barry does in the Gulf of Mexico. Our weather today will be driven by a stationary front just to our north that will provide a focus for showers and storms again this afternoon. Expect highs to rise to the upper 80s and low 90s with clouds building. Some of the storms we get today could produce gusty wind and lightning, so be aware.

This weekend’s forecast will depend on the track of what could be a landfalling hurricane by Saturday morning. Some forecast models have Barry staying on a track that would keep heavy rainfall away from Central Alabama, while a few others bring in bands of showers, storms and possibly some severe weather. Right now, we’ll call for showers and storms for both Saturday and Sunday, but we escape the brunt of the more serious weather. If you know anyone heading to or have any interest in the coast, please be aware that heavy rain, wind and some flooding is possible from the Louisiana to Alabama coasts.

Most of the impacts from Barry should be gone by Monday, but lingering showers and storms are possible. The drying out process starts on Tuesday and continues through midweek with temperatures back in the low 90s with scattered showers and storms in the afternoon.
