PRESS RELEASE FROM POLICE

“Foley Police Department has identified 29 year old Orneal McCaskey aka “OJ” (photo attached) as the suspect in the shooting of Akil Michael Figures this morning at 635 East Azalea Ave in Foley.  The investigation revealed that McCaskey drove to the residence to confront Figures over a female.  An argument ensued at the doorway and McCaskey pulled out a handgun and shot Figures at least twice in the lower hip area.  After a brief struggle in the house, McCaskey fled the area in a gold or tan colored vehicle.  Figures was taken to South Baldwin by private vehicle and later flown to Sacred Heart and has since been released.  Orneal McCaskey is wanted for questioning in this case.  The public is asked to call Foley Police Department at 251-943-4431 if you know where McCaskey is.  He is considered armed and dangerous.”

UPDATE: 11:51 Foley police now confirm the victim is indeed Akil Figures. They tell News 5 that he gave officers false information, using his brother’s name. According to a press release:

” We are working diligently to get to the bottom of this, but is difficult when the victim and some witnesses are not being forthcoming with information.  This includes the fact that the gunshot victim…who gave investigation officers false information about his identity.  As stated we will continue to investigate and will release more information to the media when ready but not until we get to that point.  We want to be able to give you accurate information as to what really happened and the parties involved. “

UPDATE: A source close the family of State Senator Vivian figures confirms the man shot this morning is the senator’s son. That source however says that the name originally reported by police is incorrect. The source says Akil Figures is the man who was shot Monday morning. A police report named the victim as another family member. But that source says that family member is safe and unharmed in Atlanta.

Akil Figures is being treated at a local hospital according to the family source.

Akil Figures has an arrest record in Mobile County, including another case where he was accused of giving false information to officers. His last arrest there was nearly 10 years ago. 

Senator Figures recently won the Democratic nomination to retain her seat. There is no opponent in the upcoming general election. 

PRESS RELEASE FROM POLICE:

Just before 7:00 am this Monday morning, Foley police received a call from neighbors that heard a gun shot and a scream coming from 635 East Azalea Ave in Foley.  A car was observed by witnesses leaving the area at a high rate of speed.  (The victim) was shot twice in the leg and thigh and was transported by private vehicle to South Baldwin Regional Medical Center.  There is no suspect at the moment, but it is still early in this ongoing investigation, and there are no further details being released at this time.
