BPD arrest man after holding people hostage, refusing to comply with authorities

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham police have arrested a man following a standoff with hostages Monday night.

The incident occurred at 504 Roebuck Drive around 10:30 p.m.

According to authorities, police responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence. Once on the scene, they found one victim who stated Demarcus Chandler, 21, was in the residence armed with a handgun and threatening others inside.

The victim told police Chandler had fired shot inside the residence and refused to let anyone leave.

After initially failing to comply with officers, Chandler eventually let the hostages leave the residence. Chandler, however, did not leave.

More BPD and SWAT officials arrived and negotiated with Chandler to get him to finally comply.

Chandler is now charged with three counts of kidnapping and one count of attempted murder, domestic violence and possession of a pistol by a forbidden person.

Chandler is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail.
