HAYDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — A 72-year-old man recently pleaded guilty to dozens of charges all related to the rape of a 6-year-old child over the course of years.
On Wednesday, Herbert Writesman pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree rape, four counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of second-degree sodomy, two counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and 16 counts of enticing a child to enter any place for immoral purposes.
According to one affidavit in the case, Writesman reportedly had sexual contact, raped and sodomized a 6-year-old girl on 16 different occasions over the course of a decade.
Writesman was arrested in January 2017. He was supposed to go on trial this week, but pleaded before opening statements were to begin.
“This is the most egregious sexual abuse case I have ever prosecuted when you consider the age of the child, the depravity of the crimes perpetrated upon the child, and the duration of the exploitation of the child,” Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey said in a written statement. “Be cautious. Talk to your children. Be curious. Talk to the people who take care of your children. Be suspicious. Ask the tough questions. You can never be too careful when it comes to protecting your children.”
First-degree rape or sodomy are Class A felonies and are punishable up to 99 years in prison.
Writesman faces a minimum of 20 years in prison. His sentencing is set for Dec. 11.
