Birmingham police officer charged with hitting prisoner

A warrant has been obtained against a Birmingham police officer Tuesday following a report of him striking a prisoner while transporting her from the jail to the hospital.

Stephon Green, 25, of Bessemer, has been charged with second-degree assault and has been placed on administrative leave without pay with a hearing scheduled for later.

On Aug. 1, supervisors with the Birmingham Police Department received a use of force complaint against Ofc. Green, claiming that he had used force against an inmate. On that evening, Green was assigned to transport a female prisoner from the Birmingham City Jail to the hospital for evaluation. After arriving at the hospital, supervisors received information of an altercation between the officer and prisoner. Supervisors arrived to find that the prisoner had sustained serious injuries to the face while in Green’s custody.

After learning of the allegations, the department immediately placed Green on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. Following the completion of the investigation and confirmation of the warrant, the information was forwarded to the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team.

On Tuesday, Green was taken into custody and transported to the Jefferson County Jail.

Green was hired with the Birmingham Police Department in April 2016. After graduation from the police academy, Green was assigned to the patrol division at the South Precinct.

“The Birmingham Police Department will continue to conduct thorough and complete investigations with a high ethical standard even when those standards must be applied to one of our own,” BPD Chief Patrick Smith said in a written statement. “We will continue to uphold our motto to protect, respect and serve citizens in the community and those that are in our custody.”

Earlier this month, Ofc. Keith Buchanan was arrested and charged with staging a shooting in Tarrant.
