BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Fire and Rescue worked to control a fire that completely destroyed one house and caused damage to a neighboring home, officials say.

Fire crews responded to a call around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning in the 2400 block of Northland Avenue. They arrived to find a one-story structure engulfed in flames. The fire caused powerlines from the main house and the neighboring home to fall, according to Battalion Cheif Williams.

Flames from the main structure spread into the attic of the house next door. Officials were able to get the flames under control before they spread any further, isolating the damage to one side of the second home.

The main house was completely destroyed. Officials believe the home was abandoned.

No one was in either house at the time of the fire.
