BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Marshe (Mar-SHAY) Pyant is a 10th grader at Birmingham’s Jackson Olin High School. Each week Marshe and Whitney Woodard get together on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
It’s Big Brother Big Sister program that helps prepare Pyant for the next phase of life.
Pyant said, “She’s preparing me for college so it’s a lot of things about college and my future.”
Whitney Woodard said, mentor, said, “Anytime I can help, whether its calculate a GPA, work on a resume, or help answer interview questions, those are always fun things rewarding things for both of us.”
This relationship is a two way street. Woodard is quick to add she benefits as well.
Woodard explained, “She’s taught me a lot of different things such as perseverance through a lot of different things in life, hard working, she’s just a great friend, loyal, supportive of her friends.”
For Pyant, it is not only what she’s learning in the program, the biggest value she sees is in the person who became her big sister.
Pyant said, “It’s not the things you know in life it is the people you know so i feel like the more people you know and get involved with can help you with anything.”
