A Huntsville fifth grader got the surprise of a lifetime Friday at Chaffee Elementary School.
His mom got back from her Army deployment and showed up to class as the school mascot.
“My heart has been racing all morning!” said Sgt. Desiree Lancey. “I have been so nervous.”
It’s been a year since Lancey held her son Kael in her arms.
“It’s hard being in the military, being away from them so much,” she said. “But seeing his face, that just initial when I walked in and I saw his face I couldn’t breathe and I was so excited.”
Lancey showed up incognito as the school’s eagle mascot when the class was singing the national anthem.
“I just kept saying, ‘there he is, there he is,'” she said. “I was ready to rip off that mascot head and go see him.”
When the time finally came, Kael’s face said it all.
“He’s my world,” said Lancey. “Him and his sister are my world. His reaction was bigger than I thought it was going to be so that made it ever so bittersweet.”
“Kael, how does it feel to have your mom back?” a reporter asked Kael after the big reveal.
“Great, like…” Kael paused and then gave his mother a giant hug.
“I would’ve ran over everybody,” Kael told his mom.
“To come and get me? That’s the best answer ever,” Lancey replied.
Now that Lancey’s back from Kuwait for good, these two have some catching up to do.
“We won our last game Saturday,” Kael said.
“That’s awesome,” replied his mom. “That’s awesome, your plays, they were really good.”
Lancey will be surprising her daughter in Arizona next.
