Thousands of tulips are blooming at the American Village in Montevallo for the second-annual Festival of Tulips!
“It’s bigger and better this year,” said Melanie Poole, Communications Officer for The American Village.
Tulips in every color of the rainbow create a blanket of 100,000 blooms. The rows of color are the perfect backdrop for family photos.
“We have tulips that are white. We have pinks, reds, yellows, oranges. We have one that is so dark burgundy red, it’s almost black. It’s called queen of night,” Poole said.
Pick armfuls of tulips to take home! Each tulip and bulb is $1.50.
Martha Lewis helps facilitate Tulip sales. She says she loves watching the reactions from people of all ages.
“It is a delight. Everything is beautiful here and all the people love it,” Lewis said. “And everybody, once they come to the tulips, asks, ‘What’s next? I want to come back.’ So it’s just a joy to share that with them.”
The tulips started out their colorful journey as fifty different varieties of bulbs from Holland. A crew planted the bulbs in neat rows back in December 2017. On Valentine’s Day, the first pops of color appeared.
“The thing about tulips is that they’re not a southern flower. So, you just don’t see these huge fields of tulips in the southern states. The Festival of Tulips is the only you-pick tulip field in the southeast,” Poole said.
After you buy your tulips, save time to look around in The American Village gift shop. They have lots of Festival of Tulips souvenirs including; aprons, mugs, and t-shirts.
