Alligators freeze in swamp with their nose above water

CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. (WIAT) — Talk about survival of the fittest. These alligators know how to protect themselves from the bitter cold in the winter.

A photo from the North Carolina Swamp immerged of an alligator still with it’s nose out of the water. The swamp park manager says 18 American alligator allowed themselves to freeze in place with their noses above ice.

The manager says alligators enter a state similar to hibernation. He says they sense when the water is at its freezing point and poke their noses into the air at the right moment.
