BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has been convicted of reckless manslaughter and aggravated child abuse in the 2017 death of his girlfriend’s toddler.
News outlets report 21-year-old Dlonta Khalil Melton was found guilty Monday. He was originally charged with murder.
Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector says Melton called authorities stating there was an unknown medical issue with his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter Levi Ellise Pointer.
Rector says the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office determined Levi suffered a significant skull fracture. She died in the hospital.
The murder indictment from 2018 says Melton caused Levi’s death by a blunt force injury to the head and withholding medical care afterward.
Sentencing for Melton is set for Sept. 25 before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Teresa Pulliam.
