DOTHAN, Ala. (WIAT) — A south Alabama man was arrested Wednesday after police say he livestreamed himself lighting a turtle doused in alcohol on fire.

Dothan Police say they received calls from numerous concerned citizens about the video, which was being streamed on Facebook Live. They say James Terrance Allen of Dothan poured alcohol on the turtle and said, “give me 100 views and I’ll light it,” then lit the animal. He then allegedly threatened to kill the turtle, or he would kill it.

Police officers found Allen and took him to the Dothan Police Department, where he was charged with aggravated animal cruelty.

The turtle, who has since been named Leonardo, was taken to Animal Services Division until he can be transported for rehabilitation. Leonardo is expected to make a full recovery and they hope he will eventually be released back into the wild. Police say Leonardo may be a gopher tortoise, which is a protected animal under the Endangered Species Act. They are working with the Alabama Game Wardens office to confirm his species.
