Alabama inmate gets support for clemency from Kim Kardashian

6/6 UPDATE: According to AP sources, President Trump commutes life sentence for Alice Marie Johnson, a drug offender championed by Kim Kardashian West.

An inmate at an Alabama prison is receiving support in her request for clemency from Kim Kardashian-West, who spent Wednesday at the White House encouraging President Trump to end her sentence.

Alice Marie Johnson is serving a life sentence without parole for her conviction as part of a drug ring in Tennessee. Her family says the sentence is too harsh for her role in the crimes, which they say were non-violent and her first offense. They’ve setup this petition to ask President Trump to grant her clemency.

“These blanket sentencing policies don’t work very well,” said Jenny Carroll, a law professor at the University of Alabama. “This woman is a classic example of someone, who she can go out and she can be a productive member of the community. And we should give her that opportunity.”
