CHILTON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The town of Thorsby is getting ready for its 30th annual Swedish Festival and there’s a new group of queens to help them celebrate!

This year’s queens include: Tiny Miss Swedish Festival Natalynn Montgomery, Little Miss Swedish Festival Lydia Payton, Young Miss Swedish Festival Carlee Wright, Junior Miss Swedish Festival Ana Nunn, and Miss Swedish Festival Celeste Montgomery.

Thorsby started the Swedish Festival back in 1988 as a way to honor the people of Scandinavian descent who settled in the area in the late 1800s and founded the town in 1895. The settlers moved to Central Alabama to raise fruits to sell and use to make wine after their original climate to the north proved unsuitable for grapes.

While the queens were crowned on October 6th, the Thorsby Swedish Festival is not held until this Saturday, October 13th. The day starts with the Viking 5k Fun Run at 8 a.m. Registration is at 7 a.m. and starts at Thorsby High School on Opportunity Drive. There is a $35 entry fee. The Thorsby Swedish Festival also features a car show and parade that starts at 9 a.m. The festival will be held at the Thorsby Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, check out the website here
