13 new homes being built in East Lake on old Cascade Plunge property

EAST LAKE, Ala. (WIAT) — 13 homes in the East Lake community are going up this week as part of the Habitat for Humanity Home Builders Blitz. They are going up on the former Cascade Plunge property.

From professional builders to the future homeowners 1,500 people are volunteering.

One of the future homeowners is Kenneth Wright.

“We are pumped up, we are excited hardly been able to sleep at night, we have been thinking about it for the longest,” said Wright.

The homeowners get a great deal on the home and interest free for 25 years. Part of the deal is they have to volunteer 300 hours. Several professional builders are out here making that dream come true.

“It’s the most rewarding thing we do we do all year every year I got guys that have worked here for years they look forward to it every year,” said builder Taylor Burton

Habitat for Humanity also has plans for the old Cascade Plunge building and pool. This pool was first opened in the 1920s, and was a hot spot for people to come and swim. Over the years, the pool and building deteriorated.

“We’re working on cleaning that up, it’s really past its prime past its use, we will clean it up, put a natural area, something nice for the community to enjoy,” said Charles Moore with Habitat for Humanity.

The 13 homes will be complete Thursday September 1, 2016.
