ATMORE, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) has confirmed an outbreak of scabies at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility over the weekend.

According to ADOC, 26 inmates have been diagnosed with the outbreak after showing symptoms Saturday.

Scabies is described as an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite. The mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it lives and proceeds to lay eggs.

Medical staff has quarantined the inmates as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of more becoming infected.
