BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — We all know how great the sites are in Alabama, but now people from around the world are starting to catch on.
The state attracted nearly 10% more overseas visitors last year, the highest percentage growth in the nation.
Around 384,000 visitors from overseas spent $585 million in Alabama according to a report by Tourism Economics. The state also saw unexpected increases from visitors coming from Australia (13%), France (12%), UK (9%) and Germany (7%).
The entire Alabama travel industry grew more than $1 billion in 2018 to a record of $15.5 billion and increased jobs by nearly 12,000.
