BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The family is all here. Six bands hailing from all of Alabama’s HBCU colleges and universities, Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Miles College, Stillman College, Talladega College and Tuskeegee University, have all come together for the first time.

On September 15, the six bands will compete for the title of “best band” at Legion Field. A celebration of education, music and culture, the event will also include seven Birmingham City School bands that will perform. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a college fair that will take place prior to the competition. Students will be able to speak to representatives from all six participating colleges.

Birmingham City Councilor William Parker says the event is a great way for high schoolers to start thinking about college.

Parker said, “As a graduate from an HBCU, I understand the importance of the battle of the bands but also the interaction with the high school students that play in the band and the interaction with the different HBCUs and the potential scholarships.”

Bands will take on Legion Field at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept.15. The college fair for students will start at 2 p.m.
