One Class at a Time: Vestavia Hills Elementary School-Central

One Class at a Time

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) — A Vestavia Hills Elementary School Central teacher is making plans on how to spend an extra $1,000 on his class.

Randolph Pettway is a science teacher and the new winner of the CBS 42 One Class at a Time grant. His class includes hands-on activities and the students seem to enjoy them the most. Most recently, Pettway was excited to learn of a program called “GEMS”. The program is aimed at encourging more girls to explore the areas of math and science.

“We saw a great opportunity to really help our girls see that… They can do a lot of these math and science and technology fields as well,” Pettway said.

To help him get his “GEM” program rolling, CBS 42 presented Pettway with a One Class at a Time grant. Pettway says that the $1,000 will come in handy.

“It’s going to really help us get a lot of materials and activities going,” Pettway said. “I want to thank everyone involved with the One Class at a Time Program. It was a total surprise. I’m amazed by it.”
