BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An Arrington Middle School teacher is making plans on how to spend $1,000 on her class. She is this week’s CBS 42 One Class at a Time recipient.
Latoya Banks teaches English and Language Arts at Arrington Middle School and she says that reading and literacy are a big focus for her students.
“Reading is very essential,” Banks said. “Not only will they use it in the classroom, they’ll use it in their everyday lives. So we promote reading and literacy. We want them to be proficient readers.”
CBS 42 surprised Ms. Banks with a $1,000 One Class at a Time grant to help her students improve their reading and literacy skills. Banks says that she will use the grant to purchase books for her students.
“We have a Read to Succeed program here, so we provide each student with a bag of books and just allow them, within their spare time, to be able to read,” Banks said. “So now I can really get me students the books that they want.”
The grant is provided by eCO Credit Union. To apply for a One Class at a Time grant, click here.
