MOODY, Ala. (WIAT) — Moody High School has reached the first round of the 5A playoffs the last two seasons but one and done just isn’t going to cut it for this team.

The Blue Devils have several returning starters that are ready to take this team deep into the postseason and it starts a core group of leaders.

“That’s one thing I am really proud of this year, we’ve got a group of seniors that provide positive leadership for us and they’ve done a great job so far,” said Moody head coach Jay Brown.

OFFENSE: Offensively, the Blue Devils return Christian Weems who carries with him a lot of momentum coming out of his junior season.

“Offensively we have our quarterback Christian Weems returning,” said Brown  “He started every game for us last year and threw for about 2,000 yards and really just improved every game each week. He is a senior and he is proud to have him back.”

An obvious absence to this year’s offense will be running back DeVante Williams who started four seasons for the Blue Devils. Finding balance is something Coach Brown believes will be key in filling that void.

“Last year we had D. Williams who was a senior and started for us four years at running back,” says Brown. “He rushed for about 4,000 yards in his career so we are having to fill that hole. We have a group of guys that are trying to fill that role and working hard to do it. We just want to be able to run the ball, first and foremost, but also be able to throw it too and not be one dimensional.”

DEFENSE: Over on defense, the Blue Devils lack size but not athleticism and experience.

“We have a nucleus of guys that have a lot of experience,” says Brown. “Both of our inside linebackers, Hunter Strickland and Justin Cowans, are returning seniors. Both had over 100 tackles last year. So we are glad those guys are back. Brett Staggs is a returning starter. He’s a defensive end, but he’s also playing offensively for us this year too.”

Last year Strickland led the team with 127 tackles and hopes this year he can add to it.

“I am going to do my best this year,” said Strickland. “I am going to break the record if I can.”

Moody will go on the road to open the season against Hamilton on August 21. Like everyone else, the Blue Devils have just a couple of weeks to prepare and have great confidence they can start the season out 1-0.

“We are all fired up we are ready to go,” said Strickland. “We are ready to win and get out there and play our hearts out.”Moody Blue Devils 2015 Football Schedule:
