BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — In this week’s edition of the eCo savings race, we’ll see how the McCord family has changed their perspective on spending money.
“To be able to save money and put more money towards our debt, we’ve decided to stop eating out and that has saved us a lot. We went from eating out all of the time to very few times,” Brooke McCord said.
Husband Pierce says that it’s not just about the money they’ve been able to save. He’s noticed a difference in other areas as well.
“Honestly I feel better from eating in. I feel healthier and a lot of the meals… honestly taste better,” he said.
“But ummm…it has created more dishes,” Brooke countered.
“The dishes have gotten a little out of hand eating at home,” Pierce agreed. “There are always pluses and minuses to things but I can deal with it when I see the amount of money we’re saving.”
The couple has also learned to handle more repairs around their home rather than paying someone else to do them.
“So..some of the repairs that we’ve done have been..like um..fixing the dishwasher,” Brooke said. “Also…we had a crack in the bathtub.”
We called around to see about refinishing. It was going to be $475, which was pretty high. So instead we’re just going to patch it and start a sinking fund where we’re going to put that money away in the sinking fund and then later on do a full bath remodel,” Pierce said.
In addition to do-it-yourself repairs, the McCords have also eliminated one large monthly expense.
“We’ve gotten rid of cable and now we have an HD antenna so we can get free local channels…and that’s saving us $120 a month. Which is wonderful,” Brooke said.
By separating needs from wants and learning to fix some things themselves, the McCords have taken control of their finances and their future.
