BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Panthers were founded by Coach Matthew Mott in an effort to help develop basketball skills local basketball players.
“When you have an AAU team you have tryouts some players don’t make those teams, my ultimate goal is to take the players who didn’t and to improve those skills so next year they can participate at a high level,” Mott said.
That includes improvement on the court and in the classroom.
“So I want these guys to be able to succeed academically before on the court,” he said.
And the Panthers have found success on both fronts…but for a young program, sometimes funds can be low, which is where Hibbett Sports and One Team at a Time came to help…and surprised the team during their end of year banquet.
“This equipment will help us in a great way as far as practice, as far as training–we also do one on one training during the off season, so we’ll grab the guys, take them to a gymnasium and we’ll work on their skills. Anything to improve them on and off the court,” Mott said.
The equipment helps the program take the next step, but most important to Coach Mott, it helps motivate his players to do better on the court and especially in the classroom.
