One Team at a Time: Munford Lady Lions

MUNFORD, Ala. (WIAT) – Spring means softball for nearly a hundred young ladies in east Alabama.

Munford High School head softball coach Darrell Smith says he has around eighty players sign up to play every season. He and his staff choose to field three teams (Middle School, JV, and Varsity) so that everyone has a chance to play and develop their skills.

“The main thing is getting coaches, especially in public education,” said Smith. “You’re having to get teachers to coach, and sometimes it’s a struggle just trying to find people to fill in positions.” It can also be tough to find enough equipment to fully prepare each of the teams. “Sometimes it’s a struggle just to get stuff to make it through the seasons,” Smith explained.

To help with the burden of equipment, CBS 42 and Hibbett Sports have selected the Munford Lady Lions as this week’s One Team At A Time. The distinction brings $1,000 of free equipment. A grateful Smith said, “It allows us just more opportunities to get out and get our kids more exposure.”
