Alabama Ballet presents “Bonnie and Clyde” in Birmingham this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — If you are looking for something fun to do this Halloween weekend that doesn’t involve haunted houses or copious amounts of candy, the Alabama Ballet Company’s production “Bonnie and Clyde” could be the perfect solution for date night or a fun way to introduce your children to the arts.

There are 40 members of the Alabama Ballet Company. Each weekday, the company rehearses and practices for hours, perfecting their art. Coming up this weekend, you and your family will be able to see the company’s beautiful ballet skills showcased in the production.

“One of the most exciting things to me about “Bonnie and Clyde” is the fact that it’s not all classical music,” said marketing director Mandy McDaniel. “We use a lot of popular songs from the time as well as some live radio broadcasts from when Bonnie and Clyde were actually on the run. So, to me, that makes it a lot more cutting edge and interesting than a solely instrumental ballet.”

Not only will the show be interesting for the audience, it’s also an exciting experience for the dancers as well.

“It’s a very iconic American story. It’s violent, but there’s a nice kind of romance element to it. And the fact that it’s a boy and girl team is obviously different. If it was just two dudes running around robbing banks, not that original,” said Max van der Sterre, the principal dancer who plays Clyde.

“Since it was a young couple, there’s the whole love story to it. It is really romantic because they come together out of the blue and they do what they love together. And then they die together tragically. It’s really sad, but at the same time, it’s really cute,” said Ariana Czernobil, who portrays Bonnie.

The dancers all agree that working together on stage is a treat.

“It’s a lot of fun to dance with your friends. You already have such a great relationship and then you create a relationship as characters,” said Czernobil.

Czernobil says that the Alabama Ballet is a hidden treasure in Birmingham.

“I’ll go out and people will ask what I do. And I say, ”I’m a dancer at Alabama Ballet.’ And they’ll have no idea that we have a professional company. But more recently, I’ve gotten a lot of, ‘Oh wow! You’re on 1st Ave S. I’ve seen a production.’ And that’s been great,” Czernobil said.
