Soaring gas prices are wrecking family budgets. But experts say there are dozens of changes many consumers can make right now that will put money back in their pockets. And it doesn’t have to be a drastic move to make a difference.
Prices keep going up. For Kim LaValle, it is all about the numbers. With four kids in ten activities, she drives more than 300 miles a week. Last year, it cost $39 to fill her mini-van. Last week it was $69. She fills up twice a week, meaning an extra $60 a week, $240 a month -- a whopping $3,120 a year.
“It’s really cut into our budgets,” LaValle said.
Is there any way to adjust to the pain at the pump? Families could try a mini-lifestyle makeover. For example, LaValle usually does all her shopping at a large supermarket chain or warehouse.
“We buy a lot of vegetables and fruit, in a month, probably a couple hundred dollars, at least," said LaValle.
Audrey Guskey is a consumer trends expert, her number one money-saving tip? Shop your local farmer’s market. “It can save you significant amounts of money,” said Guskey.
Two more money savers -- forget supermarket loyalty. Look for the stores that will double your coupons. And, shop consignment or resale first for clothing. Just a few examples where smart shopping could really pay off.
