AUBURN, Ala. (WIAT) - After eight seasons as Auburn's women's basketball coach, Nell Fortner is stepping aside.

Fortner's resignation will be effective once the season comes to a close.

Fortner has a 143-105 record at Auburn.

"I love Auburn and have absolutely loved my time here during the course of the last eight years," Fortner said.  "I have dedicated the last 28 years to coaching basketball and feel it is time for me to pursue something different."

During the 2008-2009 campaign, Fortner lead the Tigers to the schools first SEC regular season title in two decades.  That season the team went 30-4 overall, 12-2 in league play.

Before going to Auburn, Fortner served as head coach of the WNBA's Indiana Fever as well as head coach of the U.S. Women's National team that captured a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.

Fortner was a head coach at Purdue.
