BIRMINGHAM, Ala.(WIAT) -- The Samford Bulldogs got back to the field on Monday coming off their first scrimmage of the fall. It was one of few practices the Bulldogs endured that wasn't shortened due to rain or lightening as they get ready for their season opener. Here's the press release from Samford University on a more detailed look at Monday's practice:
The Samford football team went through its first two-a-day workouts of fall camp Monday at Seibert Stadium. The team practiced for about two hours in full pads in the morning and for about an hour and a half in shells in the afternoon.
Despite having two practices for the first time Monday, Samford defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Rory Segrest said the team worked hard during both of Monday's workouts.
"They did a great job pushing through," Segrest said. "Sometimes you come out and the first one is really good and then you come out in the afternoon and it's sluggish, but I thought our guys really had great focus this afternoon. They came out on a mission and worked to get better."
One of the position battles on this year's team is to see who will replace Cameron Yaw at place-kicker. Freshman Reece Everett, redshirt freshman Warren Handrahan and junior Michael O'Neal all made kicks during Saturday's scrimmage. Segrest said he likes to see the strong competition for the position.
"I think the main thing there is we have some great competition," Segrest said. "We have some guys with strong legs and they've really worked at their job, and right now it's a great competition."
On the defensive line, Samford returns a lot of experience. Segrest says that experience has helped a lot during the early stages of fall camp.
"We have a lot of experience at all of the positions," Segrest said. "What happens with that is you build a little leadership for some of the younger guys coming along, so they are really pushing one another and really working to get better."
Samford will practice again Tuesday morning. The practice is scheduled to begin at 9:10 a.m. at Seibert Stadium.
Samford opens the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, when the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in the Georgia Dome. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) start.
