BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB baseball team received a quality start from James Naile, a four-hit game from Chase Davis and a homer from Jacob German to help defeat Savannah State, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The win gave the Blazers the series after splitting the first two contests with the Tigers and improved to 15-16 on the season. Savannah State dropped to 18-14 for the year.
Naile (4-3) went seven strong innings, scattering eight hits and allowing only a first inning run. The right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out six in to record his second victory of the week.
"We were concerned about James because he had the flu two nights ago and we were not sure if he was going to be able to pitch for us today. And if went, we didn't know how strong he would be, physically," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said.
"After giving up eight freebies yesterday, James was able to pound the strike zone and not walk or hit anybody today. I was also happy that James went deep for us, as it saved our bullpen, which is encouraging since we have a five-game week coming up," Shoop said.
Cory Eller and Adam Lau followed Naile and each fired a scoreless frame to help preserve the win for the Blazers.
On offense, UAB totaled 12 hits, including a career-high four hits from center fielder Chase Davis. Ryan Prinzing and Harry Clark each went 2-for-3 and Jacob German launched his first homer of the season as part of a two hit day. Tanner Bryant added three RBI for the Blazers.
The Blazers fell behind early, as the Tigers pushed across a run in the top of the first. UAB answered by scoring single runs in the second through fifth frames before breaking it open in the seventh.
Leading 4-1 in the seventh, Bryant clubbed a two-out two-run triple off the wall in dead center field. He would later come home on a RBI base knock by Clark to give the Blazers a 7-1 advantage.
Rexford Davis was saddled with the loss for the Tigers, dropping to 4-1 on the season. The righty went six frames, giving up four earned runs off eight hits with four strikeouts.
Savannah State finished with nine hits as a team, receiving two each from Kevin Herlihy, Peter Poole and Darien Campbell.
The Blazers are set to play two road games during the week, at Samford on Tuesday and at Jacksonville State on Wednesday, before hosting Memphis for a three-game series beginning Friday.
