AUBURN - The Auburn football team held its second scrimmage of the season Saturday morning, running approximately 90 plays plus 30 kicking plays in Jordan-Hare Stadium. It was the final scrimmage of the fall for the Tigers in preparation for the season opener Aug. 30 against Louisiana-Monroe.
The scrimmage marked the 15th consecutive day the Tigers have practiced, including eight practices in the previous five days. Head coach Tommy Tuberville said the effect of all those workouts was noticeable.
“We were awfully sluggish coming out of two-a-days, but we can expect that,” said Tuberville. “It looked like we were running in mud at times, but we got something done. Mainly this scrimmage was for some of the younger guys that needed to play, needed to get tired and needed to get hit, to find out what it’s going to be like.”
Tuberville noted that the offense excelled during the first part of the scrimmage, although the defense made its presence known later.
“We started fast on offense, and I thought the defense came around the last three quarters of practice,” said Tuberville. “We had some good runs and some good blocking up front. We were a little bit more physical today. We needed that.”
The scrimmage was held under normal game conditions to help prepare the Tigers for the season opener. Tackling was also live with the exception of the quarterbacks and parts of the kicking game.
“We had a lot of good contact but also made a few more mistakes than we made last week,” said Tuberville. “We had probably seven or eight penalties. This was an SEC group (of officials) that worked and I told them to be very picky, very tough in terms of alignments and guys doing the right things.”
Tuberville stated that the scrimmage served its purpose in helping determine who might contribute during the upcoming season, but the drain of two-a-days has taken its toll on the team.
“Now we have to start finding out who’s going to play, starting from our freshmen up, and who we’re going to start putting on special teams,” said Tuberville. “We have to get their legs back. They’re pretty much gone in terms of having any quickness or speed. One guy that did show some elusiveness and made some big plays is Phillip Pierre-Louis - that’s one guy I’ll say that did well in the scrimmage. He’s not a big target, but the quarterbacks have a lot of confidence in him and confidence that he can make plays afterwards.”
The Tigers will return to practice Sunday with a 4:30 p.m. workout. The practice will be held at the practice fields behind the Athletics Complex.
Auburn's season opener is August 30 when the Tigers host Louisiana-Monroe at 6 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Single-game tickets are available for the Louisiana-Monroe, Southern Miss, Arkansas and Tennessee-Martin home games. To purchase tickets visit www.auburntigers.com or call 800-AUB-1957.
