BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama's most populous county is going to use part of a $50 million settlement from its bond dealer to restore 40-hour work weeks for employees. Most hourly workers for Jefferson County have been on a 32-hour work week since August, when the county effectively ran out of money.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A new poll shows Southerners are fretting about job loss and the economy and don't think the federal government is doing enough to help. The Winthrop Poll released today found four in 10 respondents say the economy is a top concern.
JARRATT, Va. (AP) — The mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks in and near the nation's capital has been put to death in Virginia. John Allen Muhammad died of a lethal injection last night. Muhammed and his teenage accomplice also were suspected of fatal shootings in other states, including Louisiana, Alabama and Arizona.
FOLEY, Ala. (AP) — Foley officials have opened a 33-year-old time capsule as part of the Baldwin County Bicentennial celebration. The capsule was sealed in 1976 during celebrations for America's 200th birthday.
