SELMA, Ala. (AP) — A former correctional officer will spend a year in jail and serve three years of probation for taking drugs into the prison where he worked.

Woodrow Richardson was sentenced Thursday in the Circuit court of Bibb County.

He previously pleaded guilty to felony charges of promoting prison contraband, marijuana possession and attempted distribution of a controlled substance.

Richardson worked at the Bibb County Correctional Facility and was caught during a routine employee search in April 2008.

He had four bags of marijuana wrapped in duct tape. He told officials he took the drugs there after an inmate offered him $800 to pick them up from someone in Prattville and bring them into the prison.

District Attorney Michael Jackson said his office will continue to crack down on corrupt public officials.
