BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) - This week was a week to remember for Brittany Hatter. She’s a seventh grade teacher at Bessemer City Middle School, and she’s this week’s winner of the $1,000 One Class At A Time grant.
Hatter says 95 percent of her students are on the free or discounted lunch program. She says at Bessemer Middle School, they try to do a lot with a little.
It’s that reason that explains why she is planning to spend her grant money on the simple things.
I love creativity. I want my students to be creative in their notebooks,” Hatter said. “So, they use highlighters every day. They use Post-It notes, index cards, colored pencils, markers. We need basic pencils, colored pens, stickers – all of that.”
Hatter says she wants to spend some of the money on technology for her students, as she tries to bring her science class alive.
She’d love to buy a set of microscopes and software that will make her whiteboard more interactive.
“My children, they love visuals, audio. They love for me to be able to pull up a video or picture to show them, to make it apply to what’s in their textbook,” Hatter said.
Now, thanks to the One Class At A Time program, she will be able to move from the textbook to the big screen and into the minds of her seventh grade students.
