BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) -- The work schedules for people who work at gas stations are rarely normal.
Many times employees are scheduled to work fluctuating hours.
The later the hours, the higher the danger usually is for the cashiers and anyone else working inside the station.
Two robberies in two days at gas stations in Bessemer have raised eyebrows about the safety of working in some gas stations.
Both robberies were armed robberies, and the suspects violently grabbed the cashiers at each store and threatened them.
"I was scared for my safety, my employee's safety, everybody's safety – which is very important," said Abdul Rahim.
Workers at the Shell station in Bessemer had not seen the images of the recent robberies until CBS42 stopped by and shared it with them.
Their reactions, well, tell the story of how they felt about the situation.
"It just makes me feel scared about everything," Peterson Mathenge said. "I mean, the gun and kind of stuff here."
"I mean, looking at it just scares me," Rahim added. "You know, how openly they are robbing the stores."
The images can make anyone's heart race, and it also can make anyone question any and everyone that walks through the doors of a gas station.
"Safety is the key," Mathenge stated.
Perhaps adding to the confusion and uneasiness for the two men is the fact that the gunman who held up the Kangaroo Express service station was not wearing a mask. In fact, they looked like average customers.
As such, preparing for the unexpected is one of the most important parts of the job.
And that's what Mathenge and Rahim are focused on – safety.
