HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) - On Thursday, parents from the Hoover area met at Bluff Park to rally against the Hoover City Schools Board of Education’s decision to end regular school bus service.
The board plans to cut the system after this school year.
Hoover Superintendent Andy Craig says the school system is down nearly $97 million in revenue during the past four years.
Cutting the school transportation system would save up to $2.5 million, or around three percent of the school system's budget.
In the opinion of many parents, this number is not high enough to justify the disruption of so many family’s lives.
Another question, though, is what the system has been doing with the school's funds that they can't afford to maintain the transportation system.
"You have to think is it a systematic way of weeding out the less desirable students academically and economically," Sabrina Lewis said.
Superintendent Craig sent out an email Thursday with information about a special community forum on August 8.
Parents will have the opportunity to voice their opinions about the changes to the bus system at the forum.
The school board will also present four alternative options to ending the bus system during its regular meeting on August 12th.
