Attempted murder suspect nearly runs over officer as he flees scene in Birmingham

UPDATE 2:40 PM: The suspect is now in custody, U.S. Marshals tell CBS 42's Cameron Edgeworth.

The suspect is in custody at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, according to officials.

U.S. Marshals say the incident started when U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Fugitive task force was attempting to serve an attempted murder warrant to 19-year-old Kaia Fortune at a home in the 500 block of Orchid Rd in Birmingham.

Investigators say at that time Fortune fled the scene in his car and nearly hit one of the task force officers with his vehicle. That officer was injured while jumping out of the way. The officer is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday. U.S. Marshals say at some point Fortune was shot. His injuries are non life-threatening.

Investigators are still working to determine if Fortune also fired shots at officers. Fortune is expected to face felony fleeing charges as well as assault charges for the officers injuries.
