Jefferson County, Ala. (WIAT)- According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's office, just before 3:30a.m. Saturday, deputies were called to a home in the 1900 block of Lakeside Drive in Rock Mountain Lakes to investigate a car break in.
The victim told deputies that he had seen car headlights go off in front of his house. He went to investigate and discovered two suspects inside his son in-law's truck.
The two suspects ran when they saw him. He yelled at them and one turned and fired two shots at him. Both shots missed the victim. The suspects fled in a dark colored vehicle.
Deputies began a search of the area. A black Nissan Maxima was found abandoned nearby. This vehicle had been reported stolen from the Trussville area. It had also reportedly been involved in a robbery and police pursuit with the Birmingham Police Department.
An 18 year old suspect was found hiding in an outbuilding behind a residence in the 2200 block of Lakeside Drive. No other suspects were located.
Several reports of vehicles being broken into overnight were received from this area.
18 year old Dewayne Deon Thomas of Birmingham was arrested and charged with Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Vehicle, Theft of Property 2nd Degree and Receiving Stolen Property 1st Degree. He is currently in the Jefferson County Jail with bonds totaling $60,000.
