Helena School to Stay Closed after Sewage Error

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Students of one Shelby County school will enjoy an extra-long holiday weekend after an unfortunate incident involving the city's sewage.

Helena Intermediate School was closed for three days last week and officials canceled Tuesday classes while waiting for completed lab tests to be sure bacteria from the sewage has been removed.

A malfunction at a city-owned pumping station caused sewage to back up through the pipes and into the school. It spread over about 60,000 square feet and tests from the cafeteria on Thursday came back positive for bacteria.

More cleaning was done Thursday and Friday. New tests were conducted on Sunday but the results weren't available because of the Columbus Day holiday.

School officials hope the test results will show it's safe to reopen the school on Wednesday.
