During a stinging economy, the price tag for eating healthy foods doesn't come cheap, but shoppers are finding alternatives to eat healthy on a strict budget. In the U.S., the highest rates of obesity occur among people with limited financial means, but Pocher Dumas, a cashier at a local Piggly Wiggly supermarket says that having financial means does not always have to be a ticket to unhealthy eating. She says paying attention to the fruit you purchase, can save a lot of money.
"The organic fruits are good, you know, but on a budget you want to wisely choose those items, but I think the regular fruits are just as good."'
Also, try some vegetables you may have overlooked before, like squash.
"You can do your stir fry with your zucchini and your squash. You can also bake it; you can have buttered up squash which is very good and it's pretty cheap and reasonable," said shopper, Pat Ewert.
Another shopper, Kathy Hilary, says cauliflower is another cheap veggie that makes a delicious dish.
"I steam it, put me a little butter on there, and it's real good. Put some cheese on it. It's the bomb!"
If you're looking for a quick snack, bananas are inexpensive, healthy, and available all year. There's also popcorn; getting the unbuttered flavor is recommended by nutritionists. When you can, switch ground beef to ground turkey, and generic products are always easier on the pocket. So, your stop to a cheaper, healthier diet could be few calories and dollars away.
