Former Alabama football coach Gene Stallings helped kick off UAB's transplant fund raising drive Monday.  Stallings delivered the keynote address, honoring UAB transplant pioneer Dr. Arnold Diethelm.

Back in the late 1960's, Diethelm performed the first kidney transplant ever and the first transplant of any kind in the state of Alabama.  UAB Medical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplants Dr. Robert Gaston says it's good to be known nationwide.

"In a mid-size city like Birmingham, that is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the best places in the world to have a transplant, we owe that heritage to Dr. Diethelm."

The fund raiser is the largest for the program and is the first step in efforts to establish a formal comprehensive transplant center at UAB.
